Create a reaction-video picture-in-picture (PiP) edit by keeping the source footage as the full-frame video and placing your face-camera recording above it as a smaller overlay. Sync the two clips, resize and position the camera frame around important source visuals, then review audio, captions, and export settings before publishing.

The goal is not simply to put your face in a corner. A good reaction or commentary edit lets viewers follow the original video while clearly seeing and hearing your response at the moments that matter.

Choose a Capture Setup That Preserves Editing Control

You can record your reaction camera and source footage as separate files, or capture them together in a pre-built layout. The right choice depends on how much flexibility you need later.

Separate recordings are usually the safer choice for commentary, gaming, tutorials, and cultural analysis. For example, a gaming creator can move the face camera away from a mission prompt or HUD during the edit instead of leaving that information covered for the entire video.

Before recording, create an easy sync point. A clap, spoken countdown, or a distinct visible action at the start gives you a shared moment to line up later. Keep your camera recording running long enough to cover the source segment you plan to discuss.

Build the PiP Timeline

A PiP effect places a smaller video window over a larger background video. In a documented picture-in-picture editing workflow, the background clip sits on a lower timeline track and the smaller overlay clip is placed above it; the overlay can then be resized and repositioned.

There is no universal "best corner" for a reaction-video PiP. The right position changes from clip to clip depending on where the source places subtitles, speakers, gameplay controls, diagrams, or lower-third text.

Start with the smallest camera window that still makes your expression readable. Then inspect the source before committing to placement.

Protect Important Screen Areas

Move, shrink, or temporarily hide the PiP frame when it overlaps:

Use Styling Only When It Improves Separation

A clean rectangle is often enough. If the camera image blends into a bright or busy source clip, a subtle border, shadow, or contrasting background can help viewers distinguish the two layers.

Some editors also offer circular or rectangular masks for an overlay. These are optional treatments, not requirements. A circular crop can make a webcam frame feel less intrusive, while a rectangular crop may preserve more facial expression and background context. Mask, border, shadow, transition, and motion controls vary by editor, so choose them for clarity rather than decoration.

Avoid constant movement. An animated PiP frame can draw attention away from a serious explanation, a key quote, or a moment viewers need to inspect closely.

Balance Commentary, Source Audio, and Captions

Your audio decisions should follow the purpose of each moment.

During Commentary

When you are explaining, criticizing, or reacting to a point, make your voice the priority. Reduce or pause the source audio if two voices would compete. The viewer should not have to choose which speaker to understand.

During Source Listening Moments

When the original line, sound effect, or music cue is essential to your point, give it space. Stop speaking briefly, lower your commentary track, or cut to a smaller or hidden face-camera frame while the audience listens.

During Captioned Sections

Captions need their own safe area. Review every captioned segment after the PiP frame is in place, including captions added by you and text already embedded in the source footage.

For YouTube, the official recommended upload encoding settings specify MP4 as the recommended container and H.264 as the recommended video codec. YouTube also recommends uploading video at the same frame rate at which it was recorded. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings for every destination.

For a typical YouTube SDR upload, also review the following before exporting:

Adding a reaction camera, resizing a clip, muting audio, or providing commentary does not automatically prevent copyright claims or determine whether a use qualifies as fair use. Rights outcomes depend on the specific footage, how it is used, applicable law, and the platform's processes.

On YouTube, a rightsholder's Content ID policy for matched material may block viewing, monetize the video with ads, or track viewership, as described in YouTube's copyright tools and policies. A reaction or commentary format is not a guarantee that an upload will be claim-free.

Before publishing, review whether you have permission to use the footage, whether the source material is necessary to your commentary, and whether you can support the basis for your use. Seek qualified legal guidance for questions that require legal interpretation.
