For a straightforward tutorial, record your screen and webcam in one scene with a multi-source recorder such as OBS Studio. Add the lesson screen as a Display Capture or Window Capture source, add the webcam as a Video Capture Device, place the camera frame away from important controls, select the microphone you will narrate with, and review a short test before recording the full lesson.
The goal is not simply to show your face and screen at once. Learners should be able to read the demonstration, follow your explanation, and see the presenter without losing access to the interface, slide, code, or document being taught.
Choose a Combined Recording or Separate Captures
A combined screen-and-webcam recording is the simplest choice when your presenter frame will stay in one corner throughout the lesson. It produces a ready-to-review tutorial in which the screen and webcam are already arranged together.
Consider capturing the screen and presenter separately when you expect substantial editing later-for example, if you may need to enlarge the presenter, move the webcam around different parts of the screen, or remove extended sections of explanation. This approach creates more editorial flexibility, but it also means more decisions in post-production.
For most software demonstrations, course walkthroughs, and how-to lessons, start with one combined scene. Keep the production setup simple so your attention stays on teaching.
Build a Readable Screen-and-Webcam Scene in OBS
In OBS Studio, a scene can include both the instructional screen and the webcam:

- Add a Video Capture Device source for the webcam. 3
- Let the lesson screen fill the canvas. 4
- Click the webcam source in the preview and drag it into an open corner. 5
- Resize the webcam using its bounding-box handles. If the source will not move, check that it is unlocked in the Sources dock.
Choose the webcam corner based on the lesson, not habit. Before recording, identify the areas learners must see: navigation menus, settings panels, code, spreadsheet columns, slide content, or an on-screen example. Put the camera frame where it will not cover those areas.
If the webcam framing needs adjustment, OBS provides more precise resizing and cropping through Edit Transform. You can also crop by holding the Alt key while dragging a source edge.
A useful default layout is a full-screen demonstration with a small presenter frame in a quiet corner. If your lesson changes screens or opens panels in different locations, pause and reposition the webcam before the next recording segment rather than leaving key material obscured.
Prioritize Narration and Practical Motion
Select the microphone you intend to use before you begin. During the test recording, listen for intelligible speech at a consistent volume. Avoid competing voices or background music that makes the explanation harder to follow; clear, consistent audio is an important accessibility consideration for educational video, as noted in accessible video guidance.
For many tutorial videos, 30 frames per second is a practical starting point. Move to 60 fps only when fast cursor movement, animation, or rapidly changing on-screen material genuinely benefits from smoother motion. At the same resolution, 60 fps files can be roughly twice the size of 30 fps files, so use the higher setting deliberately.
Your test should answer a few basic questions:

- Can learners read the interface at normal viewing size? 4
- Do the screen action, webcam movement, and narration appear to line up?
Correct these issues before recording a full lesson. A short retake is much easier than repairing a long tutorial afterward.
Capture System Audio Only When Learners Need It
Many tutorials need only your voice. In that case, focus on recording a clear microphone signal and avoid adding unnecessary audio sources.
If learners need to hear an application-such as a music tool, language-practice example, or software alert-verify system-audio capture before recording the lesson. On macOS, the built-in Screenshot toolbar opened with Shift-Command-5 does not offer a built-in System Audio option. QuickTime Player can record microphone input but does not natively record system audio.
A virtual audio driver can route Mac system output into a recorder as an input source. In a routing setup that combines a virtual driver with speakers, a Multi-Output Device can send audio to both destinations. Treat this as a configuration step to test carefully: a general system-audio route can capture all system sound as one stream, not just a single app.
Run a Preflight Before Recording
A small preparation routine protects both lesson quality and private information.

- Choose a single window or browser tab when it contains everything learners need. This can reduce exposure of unrelated desktop content compared with recording the entire screen. 3
- Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus to suppress incoming notification banners and previews. 4
- Close private tabs, messages, account pages, gradebooks, student records, and any document containing sensitive information. 5
- Check autofill suggestions, saved passwords, contact names, phone numbers, QR codes, and other details that may be visible in the recording. 6
- Record a short sample and watch it through before beginning the full lesson.
Focused capture and notification suppression reduce risk, but they do not hide information already visible inside the selected window or tab. Review the completed recording in full before sharing it.
Finish with a Learner-First Quality Check
Before publishing, ask four questions: Can learners read the screen? Can they hear the explanation clearly? Can they see the presenter without losing essential on-screen content? Can they access the final lesson in the format you intend to share?
