Use 16:9 for widescreen viewing, 9:16 for full-screen vertical video, 4:5 for portrait-oriented feed posts, and 1:1 for square feed assets. Start with the placement that matters most, then create separate versions whenever one crop would compromise the subject, product, text, or call to action.
An aspect ratio describes a frame's shape, not its quality. The first number is width; the second is height. For example, 16:9 is wider than it is tall, while 9:16 is taller than it is wide.
A 1920 × 1080 video and a 3840 × 2160 video are both 16:9. The second file has more pixels, but neither ratio is inherently "better." The useful question is: Will this shape suit the way people will see it?
A quick guide to the four common ratios
These dimensions are practical, scalable working examples-not permanent upload requirements for every platform. Before exporting, check the current specifications for the exact organic placement or ad placement you plan to use.
What each shape asks of your composition

- 9:16 favors a strong vertical subject. A person, product, or headline can occupy the center of a phone screen without competing with unused side space. 3

- 1:1 creates a stable, symmetrical frame. It is useful when the design needs to remain centered and adaptable, though it may require more selective cropping of wide or tall footage.
Choose the placement first, not the camera frame
A camera may record in one shape, but publishing is a display decision. A horizontal interview can be a good 16:9 master, yet a vertical-video placement may need a redesigned edit rather than a simple crop.
Use this decision path:

- Will the same campaign run in materially different shapes? Build separate versions. Do not assume one export will look equally intentional everywhere.
Accepted is not the same as recommended
A platform may technically accept a file that does not match the placement's preferred presentation. That does not mean the result will fill the screen or preserve your composition.
An off-ratio upload may be displayed with:

- a crop that removes the edges; 2
- unused space or borders around the image; 3
- a smaller-looking presentation in a feed; 4
- a changed preview treatment; or 5
- a framing adjustment that affects titles, faces, or products.
The safest approach is to distinguish three questions:
A 16:9 video, for example, cannot fill a 9:16 screen without either cropping, redesigning the layout, or leaving unused space. If the interview subject is positioned at one side of the wide frame, a vertical crop may remove them altogether. In that situation, a dedicated vertical edit is usually safer than a one-click resize.
Treat thumbnails as their own format decision
A thumbnail is not simply a still frame from a video. It is a separate image designed for a particular preview surface.
For standard YouTube video thumbnails, YouTube recommends a 16:9 ratio and recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. That guidance applies to the thumbnail image, not to the video's upload canvas.
Vertical YouTube videos introduce an important exception. A vertical video with a 16:9 custom thumbnail can show an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on YouTube Home, Explore, and Subscription pages. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. In practical terms, do not rely on tiny edge details or wide horizontal text to carry the thumbnail's message for a vertical video.
Podcast playlists are another specific exception: YouTube calls for a 1:1 thumbnail rather than 16:9.
YouTube Shorts require a different workflow still. Creators cannot upload a custom thumbnail for a Short in the same way they can for long-form videos. Instead, they select a frame from the Short; that frame is used in search results, hashtag and audio pivot pages, and on the channel page. Once selected during upload, it cannot be changed afterward.
For Shorts, plan a thumbnail-worthy moment inside the video itself: a clear face, product, result, or title card that remains understandable as a selected frame.
Compose for crops, previews, and overlays
Ratio selection is only the first step. The next is protecting what viewers need to see.
When adapting one scene across 16:9, 9:16, 4:5, and 1:1, preserve the message rather than forcing the same crop:

- In 9:16, they may need to be stacked vertically, with the presenter above the product or vice versa. 3
- In 4:5, a closer crop can retain both while keeping the design suited to a feed. 4
- In 1:1, the strongest approach may be a centered product, a single person, or a simplified graphic.
A practical framing checklist
Before exporting, check each version for these issues:

- Do not place essential text, captions, logos, prices, or calls to action at the extreme edges. 3
- Leave room around a face, product, or demonstration-especially when converting wide footage to vertical. 4
- Make sure text remains readable at small preview sizes. 5
- Avoid building the entire message into a narrow strip at the top or bottom of a vertical frame. 6
- Preview the asset in its intended placement when possible.
There is no universal pixel safe zone. Interface controls, captions, profile elements, and call-to-action areas can vary by platform, device, placement, and ad format. Check current platform guidance and the live publishing preview before treating any area as safe.
Build a master asset, then make purposeful versions
A master asset is useful when it preserves enough visual room to create alternate crops. It is not a promise that one final export belongs everywhere.
A simple production workflow is:

- List destinations before editing. Separate full-screen vertical video, feed posts, widescreen video, thumbnails, and paid placements. 2
- Choose the priority canvas. Edit first for the placement with the greatest importance or reach. 3
- Create derivatives when the viewing experience changes. Duplicate the project and resize the video for each target aspect ratio for 16:9, 9:16, 4:5, or 1:1 as needed. Rename exports clearly, such as Video-16x9, Vertical-9x16, Feed-4x5, and Square-1x1. 4
- Validate the final destination. Check framing, legibility, overlays, preview behavior, and current upload requirements before publishing.
Create a separate version when:
- 1
- a vertical crop cuts off a person, product, or demonstration; 2
- text must move to remain clear; 3
- the feed post and full-screen video need different visual hierarchy; 4
- the thumbnail needs a different composition from the video frame; or 5
- a paid placement has requirements that differ from the organic post.
Organic publishing requirements should not be treated as ad requirements. Meta's ads guidance is organized by ad format and placement, with technical requirements such as dimensions and file size varying accordingly. Verify the current requirements for every selected paid placement rather than reusing an organic export without checking it.
Choose 9:16 for immersive full-screen vertical placements, 4:5 for stronger portrait-feed presence where supported, 1:1 when square consistency matters, and 16:9 for widescreen viewing. Then verify the destination's current organic or ad requirements, keep essential elements in protected areas, and create separate versions whenever a different shape changes the viewing experience.
